Rail Construction and Maintenance

We deliver certainty through quality railway construction and reliable maintenance, executed safely and consistently.

Rail Construction and Maintenance

Infrastructure is fundamental to the movement of goods, people and economic activity. SAFLog supports the construction industry by delivering specialised rail infrastructure services that enable clients to build, rehabilitate and maintain reliable rail networks within industrial and logistics environments.

Our expertise covers rail infrastructure consultancy, planning and development, project management, new track construction, earthworks, track rehabilitation, upgrades, welding, turnouts, level crossings and ongoing maintenance. We work across the infrastructure lifecycle, providing solutions that help clients maintain safe and operationally available rail assets while supporting the long-term performance of their facilities.

From constructing new railway lines to restoring and upgrading existing infrastructure, SAFLog brings together experienced rail professionals, project management capability and specialised equipment to execute complex infrastructure projects. Our experience includes major rail construction and rehabilitation projects such as the 6 km Gibela manufacturing facility railway lines, the rehabilitation of the Markman siding and the PPC Cement siding extension in Port Elizabeth.

Safety in Rail Maintenance and Construction

At SAFLog Railway Maintenance and Construction safety is at the centre of every project we undertake and have completed for the past 25 years. We easily blend into our clients' safety cultures, as safety is more than a requirement — it is a way of life for our Railway Maintenance and Construction team.

We deliver certainty through quality railway construction and reliable maintenance, executed safely and consistently.

Our teams are fully conscious of the high-risk rail environments in which they operate, working with discipline, coordination and constant attention to changing site conditions. They follow controlled access procedures, maintain communication with authorised site representatives and apply safe practices when working around track infrastructure, moving equipment and operational rail areas.

Industry context

Cement

SAFLog has partnered with AfriSam for nearly two decades, building a long-standing relationship focused on practical, sustainable and mutually beneficial logistics solutions. SAFLog currently supports AfriSam operations at three sites: Brakpan, Roodepoort and Dudfield.

Construction operating context

Brakpan operations

Brakpan operations are divided into two main areas: packing and rail operations.

Packing operations involve packing cement products into 25 kg and 50 kg bags, followed by palletising for customer distribution.

Rail operations focus on handling and offloading milled products into the main silo. These products are then blended and mixed into different AfriSam product lines. SAFLog supports this process through locomotive shunting during offloading, carried out by a competent and trained team.

Roodepoort operations

Roodepoort operations primarily involve shunting bulk product to the tippler area for offloading. This work is mainly performed using one of SAFLog’s smaller locomotives, commonly referred to as funkies, and is carried out by trained personnel.

Dudfield operations

Dudfield operations are structured around three main activities: packing, clinker loading and shunting.

Packing operations involve packing cement products into 50 kg bags and palletising them for customer distribution.

Clinker operations involve loading bulk product into rail wagons using specialised equipment.

Shunting operations support the movement of loaded wagons to the exchange yard for onward dispatch to various destinations. Mainline locomotives are also used to bring empty wagons from the exchange yard for loading and to dispatch loaded wagons back to the exchange.
